The Industry
The Ghanaian handicraft industry can be described as somewhat, a peasant
industry. The sector has suffered a steady decline over the last few
decades as a result of many factors. Prevalent among these factors is
the source of funding for local artisans, identification of potential
markets and a lack of modern equipment and production techniques.
Other factors included a lack of information
on the changing or dynamic world market for handicrafts. The issue is
not a lack of innovation or creative insight on the part of the artisans
but simply a lack of awareness on the type of products that sell and
how to get the needed attention from both the local and international
consumer as well as corporate buyers.
However, it must be admitted that marketing
research and training on the sort of products that are on demand on
the international scene is paramount to establishing a secure stream
of income for themselves. International companies spend extraordinary
amounts of money and resources in market research to be in tune with
what consumers want but this is quite lacking on the local scene.
