Training Designers for the Handicraft Industry — The Ford Foundation
ATAG deems the sustenance of the industry as paramount and has therefore,
been developing not only its material but also human resources. The
strategy that ATAG has adopted in developing and sustaining the human
resource base of the industry is to develop designers at the tertiary
school level who will graduate to fit into the Handicraft Industry.
ATAG's focus has been on the students of the Department of Rural Art
and Industry of the College of Art and the Kwame Nkrumah University
of Science and Technology, Kumasi, using stakeholders in the industry
to teach the students how to design, develop, produce and market the
handicraft products. The essence of using this approach is to advance
the level of professionalism in the entire handicraft business.

on a 1500ha forest plantation project (500ha in each of the three regions,
Volta, Ashanti and Eastern Regions respectively) to replace the wood
that is cut for the production of the handicrafts. It is expected that
the 15oo ha area will be cultivated within a decade.
